What is the difference between restless leg syndrome and diabetic neurapothy?
two separate diseases
diabetic neuropathy also causes no feeling at all. or hot burning sensations in the feet and other parts of the body. the main reason diabetics are told to keep their shoes on in the house as well as outside is because a diabetic can step on glass or other sharp objects and never feel it. by the time they realize they have been hurt, it is not pretty. many people have lost their feet as a result. and who wants to be an amputee? not me. i get yelled at constantly for not wearing shoes in my house. and believe me i have stepped on slivers of glass when i never knew there was any. so what i am being told, to wear my shoes, is correct. i just don't always do it. and i have been diabetic for 25 years so i know neuropathy. i have it in my gut as well. so i have a lot of digestive issues. in my hands…and it can cause immediate carpal tunnel syndrome. yes, over night. i was shocked that i was diagnosed with carpal tunnel while in the hospital for something else. the neurosurgeon said it is common for diabetes to develop it with no warning because of neuropathy.
restless leg syndrome is a sleep disorder. and many times that person has sleep apnea. i don't know if they are connected but my husband has the rls and kicks the hell out of me and the bed when he is having a bad night. thank goodness i have a guest room…..

Restless leg syndrome is an aberration of sleep, diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage due to diabetes. The symptoms of RLS are typically limited to sleep problems (plus the occasional bruised spouse).
DN usually begins with senory loss (feet first, perhaps progressing). It can also involve the autonomic nervous system (the non-vountary system controlling, balance, intestinal contractions, erections, sweating, heat conrol, …). The sensory loss is dangerous because pain is a waning signal. Without it, blisters, punctures, ill-fitting shoes, … can all go unnoticed for long periods, leading possibly to ulcers or other slow healing wounds.
