Most people just shake them a little but a good open fisted slap across the face should take care of the problem. Try to leave a welt right next to his nose to block the air passage. He needs to see his doctor. Apnea is a potentially serious medical condition that can be treated without drugs. Only his doctor can diagnose him, but it's as simple as having a one-time sleep-study done and his insurance will probably cover it. I would try a few different methods from the drugstore. You could try the strips, the sprays and I think their are pills too. It is expensive, about £9 but it works and you only have to spray it straight into the throat of the snorer before he goes to sleep. It could be a sleep apnea problem for which a CPAP machine is effective. If he sleeps on his back and his mouth falls open, he can use a chin strap to, literally, keep his mouth shut.
